What is Modacrylic?
Modacrylic is a synthetic copolymer, meaning it’s created from a blend of different synthetic materials, mainly acrylonitrile. Its unique chemical structure gives it a crucial and inherent flame-resistant property.
Unlike cotton or polyester, which can ignite and burn rapidly, modacrylic fibers are self-extinguishing. When exposed to a flame, they do not melt or drip. Instead, they carbonize and form a protective char barrier. This process effectively starves the fire of fuel and prevents it from spreading, significantly reducing the risk of severe burns.
The flame resistance is from the fibre’s molecular structure itself, thus, cannot be washed out, worn away, or compromised over the garment’s lifetime.
